The Forever Alone meme depicts a vulnerable rage comic character that primarily stands for being alone and disappointed with life. Those who create this type of Internet meme usually change one or both the words from the term forever alone to create a funny effect. The Forever Alone character is thought of as the first of the main characters to have evolved from the popular comic series, Rage Guy. The comic was first posted in the year 2009 on 4chan. However, many sources also claim that the comic was originally posted in an "April Fools" thread created by Azuul on FunnyJunk in May, 2010.

Around June of 2010, there are another case of a salaried bachelor was found on 4chan. This increased the popularity of this meme on major humor site. And, its popularity of this meme got fueled by the increase rage comics’ popularity, and it was also during this time that "Forever Alone" and jokes of "Socially Awkward Penguin" nature became a hit on Reddit. The popularity of this meme grew so much that by September of 2010, more than 23,000 "Forever Alone" image results were found on on Tumblr. And, in the same month Forever Alone Comics was released to catch the tide of the ever-growing compilation of 4-panel comics. Blogs started giving huge coverage to the "Forever Alone" meme from October 2010 onwards. Gradually, the meaning of the meme moved out of its rage comic image and generally came to be associated with "being alone."

And, in March 2011, the users on Reddit and 4chan started planning a flash mob on a dating website OKCupid by creating their fake profiles. Single males were asked to reach the Times Square in New York City on May 13, the same year. The Urlesque’s Report says that the details of the flash mob were posted by the users on blogs and forms such as the NYMag, Mainboard, Skim Online, Social Spew and the Dating Service Reporter.

The huge amount of incoming web traffic put out the Earthcam servers for 40 minutes. And, those who could access the live stream captured and uploaded the images of men who were at the event site through 4chan and Tumblr. And, soon the Earthcam feed found a guest account appearing with a Forever Alone picture standing beside a phone booth. And, one of the reporters from Knowyourmeme visited the event site to interview the men out there. There is another popular event associated with the "Forever Alone" meme. Sony Ericsson, the leading mobile phone maker, in November of 2011 launched different video ads that featured the Forever Alone character. This was part of their campaign for Xperiathon, called "The Loneliest Marathon in the World."
